Here’s a bit of sad news for owners of the Samsung Galaxy S and similarly-specced devices made by the Korean company (including the original Galaxy Tab). The saga of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update has concluded, and not in a nice way.
To put it plainly, there will be no ICS update. There will also not be any ‘value pack’ offerings for these gadgets. The ‘value pack’ was rumored to consist of some new features found in ICS, but without containing all the ICS bits and pieces (and obviously without the ICS-specific version of Samsung’s favorite bloatware called TouchWiz). Speaking of TouchWiz, you can still blame it for this abrupt turn of events. The bloated UI overlay that Samsung likes to grace its devices with simply can’t handle both an Ice Cream Sandwich base as well as only 512 MB of RAM.
Samsung just told The Next Web what we just told you. So stop dreaming about official ICS updates, value packs, and the likes. At this point your attention should turn to the community. Your favorite ROM maker will surely come up with an ICS-based offering in no time.
Samsung is basically just telling you to buy a newer device. They’d love it if it was the Galaxy S II, of course. But if you’re willing to take a trip down on Tinkerer’s Avenue, you may not need to do that after all. The choice is yours.
